In the fall of 2006, the Assembly of Architects introduced The Drawing Board Project at St. Paul 's Benjamin E Mays Magnet School as a youth outreach and education activity. It is based on a curriculum exercise called Environmental Literacy (EL), which was developed by former University of Minnesota professor, Mary DeLaittre. EL is an interdisciplinary curriculum for 4-12th grade students teaching them how to see, read and think critically about the built and natural environment. The project goals are to educate 4th grade students on architecture and urban planning using the proposed light rail transit project on University Avenue as an interactive exercise. AOA has created a formal working relationship agreement with Benjamin E. Mays, and has retained Mrs. DeLaittre as a consultant for the life of this project.
Through their interactive 8-week training program called “The Drawing Board” Project, they are able to instill the importance of promoting the study of history, art, science, math and technology as a means to a successful career path in the environmental design profession. These students also have the opportunity to understand the process of building a community, and to be engaged with community organizations and government officials in planning the future direction of their neighborhoods. By developing and building human talent and capacity, the Assembly of Architects believes that these strategic programs can only create a win-win situation in outcomes leading to:
